The journey of African American women in dentistry is one of resilience and determination. In 1869, Dr. Robert Tanner Freeman became the first African American to earn a dental degree, paving the way for others. Shortly after, in 1890, Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins made history as the first African American woman to become a licensed dentist in the United States. Her courage and dedication opened doors for countless women of color to follow their passion for oral health and patient care.
Today, African American women continue to lead and innovate in the field, exemplifying excellence in both general dentistry and specialized practices like orthodontics.
